Book Announcement: “Sovereignty: Overcoming Authoritarianism”

Have you ever asked yourself what you’d like your legacy to be?

Sovereignty: Overcoming Authoritarianism explores the question of which aspects of our parents’ lives are worth emulating and which deserve to be left behind. This first part of the Generations Trilogy takes us from the rubble of World War II and the deprivations of the 1950s to the hopes for a brighter future in the 1960s, as a new international order emerged in the Cold War.

The generation leaving us in the 2020s rebuilt a country and a society, overcoming severe material challenges and freeing themselves and us from the mindset of authoritarianism.

Over the past three decades, I have had the opportunity to study societies at very different stages of their evolution – in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe; I feel the insights in this book apply to all of them.

Our challenges in the 21st century are just as daunting, or perhaps even more so. If we are to master them, we need to learn from those who came before us. Above all, appreciate one another and live up to the responsibility we have to future generations.
