Day 0: Vienna to Istanbul

And we’re off! What a blessing to be married to a seasoned fellow traveler who not only let’s me go on these trips, but helps me prepare for them. Reduces packing stress by half and means I get to focus on the journey from the moment I leave home. The conflicts in this spring of 2026 have not only blocked the two routes that would not require switching modes of transport (south via Iran or north via Ukraine), but have also severely disrupted air travel – reminding me what a privilege it is to be able to travel so freely and flexibly.

I’m very excited to finally start a next adventure with Paul – after the Atlantic crossing 2023 on his cat and several bike tours in Central Asia including the epic spring 2018 trip to Sonkul with Trevor, returning via the 3000m-Ala Too Pass in a blizzard. Also, returning to Central Asia for the first time since leaving Bishkek in 2022…

+ Highlights: lucky to get a cheap ticket for AJet via Sabiha Gökcen

– Challenges: longish flight on a budget airline…

→ Next: the first day in Bishkek will be all about getting the final documents and the bikes ready.
